Founding and Development History

The Korean Society of Craniofacial Plastic Surgery (KSCPS) was established in 1993 under its original name, the "Korean Society for Facial Deformity Research," with Professor Park Byung-Yoon serving as its first president. Founded with 46 members, the society aimed to advance academic and clinical developments in reconstructing congenital craniofacial deformities. Over time, its scope expanded to include trauma, tumors, and aesthetic surgical treatments, solidifying its role as a leading professional organization for plastic surgeons specializing in craniofacial surgery.

Milestones in Development

  • 1993 Foundation of the Korean Society for Facial Deformity Research with 46 members.
  • 1998 Hosted the first academic conference at Seoul Central Hospital, attended by over 250 members.
  • 1999 Integrated its annual conference with the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons' fall conference.
  • 2002 The society issued membership certificates to 164 full members, marking a significant step in formalizing its structure.

Structural Evolution

  • 2005 Introduction of the Chairman System, with Professor Na Dong-Gyun as the first chairman. This marked the beginning of biannual spring and fall academic conferences.
  • 2009 Initiation of international academic exchanges under Chairman Ko Kyung-Seok, with foreign speakers enhancing the depth and breadth of conference content.
  • 2011 Launched practical workshops under Chairman Lee Sam-Yong to address essential but often overlooked topics, benefiting both trainees and young surgeons.

Global Recognition and Collaboration

  • 2010 The society participated as a guest society at the European Association for Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery (EACMFS), marking its entry into the international academic arena.
  • 2014 Began regular academic exchanges with the Egyptian Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ESPRS).
  • 2017 Prepared for collaboration with the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons (ASMS), further expanding its international network.

Academic Contributions

  • 2000 Launched its official journal, the "Journal of the Korean Cleft-Craniofacial Association."Published in Korean twice a year.
  • 2012 Rebranded as the "Archives of Craniofacial Surgery."
  • 2014 Change to English as the official journal language. Published three timesa year.
  • 2016 Published four times a year.
  • 2017 Indexed in PubMed Central (PMC)
  • 2019 Indexed in Scopus.Published six times a year.
  • 2023 Achievement of a CiteScore 2.9 and SJR Q1 in the category of Otorhinolaryngology.

Future Aspirations

The society aims to continue its growth by adapting to the changing medical landscape, enhancing educational programs, and fostering international collaborations. By maintaining high ethical standards and promoting innovative research, the KSCPS seeks to remain a trusted leader in craniofacial surgery, both domestically and globally.
